I want you to watch this video and while viewing it enter your thoughts regarding some of the qualities you see in the students and the teacher that you believe are valuable. In general: What inspires students and motivates their learning?
This video, on educational blogging comes from for an awarding winning Los Angeles elementary school teacher Linda Yollis.
Amazing that students in the primary grades can do this with a cause. Gives me hope that my students could expand further. I love the idea of having an authentic audience and leaving a positive digital footprint….makes for real world skills.
I love that Ms. Yollis is starting with students that age, and teaching them how to be safe online. This is a great, positive learning experience for students and their families.
At the high school level, it might be a little trickier to get students excited about a blog. Creating a positive image and culture around blogging will be necessary.
Blogging is a great way to share ideas and it's a good idea to always include a question in a blog comment to stimulate and move the conversation. So, what motivates you to blog?
Remember: Be safe! Never give private/personal information in any blog.
These 3rd graders are so excited to connect with other countries. One of the students who traveled was also able to share her experience abroad with her classmates. I think it's wonderful that they are learning important skills so young, such as basic technological skills, how to properly/safely communicate online, proper grammar usage, etc. I wonder how much parent involvement is needed for these 3rd graders to follow through with this activity.
I loved the way the students are so clear about how to evaluate their posts. I teach 5th Graders who absolutely love to communicate with each other digitally. At the moment, they are doing it through mind-numbingly lame group emails. I blog would be a much better medium for connecting with each other, and a system for evaluating the usefulness of their posts would be great for building personal accountability.

I wonder if Ms. Yollis' third grade blog has a focus, or simply allows the students to blog about whatever they want?

ReplyDeleteKnowing that their writing is available to not only their teacher, but their peers as well is powerful. I believe it would create deeper thinking.
